About the Author

Frazer Lee is a novelist, screenwriter, and filmmaker whose debut novel The Lamplighters was a Bram Stoker Award(R) Finalist. His film credits include the acclaimed feature film Panic Button. Frazer resides with his family in Buckinghamshire, just across the cemetery from the real-life Hammer House of Horror.

Frazer Lee’s debut novel, The Lamplighters was a Bram Stoker Award® Finalist for ‘Superior Achievement in a First Novel’.

One of Frazer’s early short stories received a Geoffrey Ashe Prize from the Library of Avalon, Glastonbury. His short fiction has since appeared in numerous anthologies including the acclaimed ‘Read By Dawn’ series.

Also a screenwriter and filmmaker, Frazer’s movie credits include the award-winning short horror films ‘On Edge’, ‘Red Lines’, ‘Simone’, and the critically acclaimed horror/thriller feature (and movie novelization) ‘Panic Button’.

Frazer lectures in Creative Writing and Screenwriting at Brunel University London and Birkbeck, University of London. He resides with his family in leafy Buckinghamshire, England where (when he’s not getting lost in a forest) he is working on new fiction and film projects.

Nightmarish and intriguing

Wonderfully atmospheric, the book spirals ever more into twisted nightmares. A little disorientating at times (at one point I was sure I'd missed a chapter) it is nonetheless a highly intriguing and hard to put down.

Well-written but distressing story of Mike and his girlfriend and friends, celebrating the completion of their university degrees with a trip to a house in the Highlands in Scotland. Unfortunately the cottage is haunted/cursed, and things go very badly wrong for Mike. This was scary and disturbing. Let’s just say I won’t reread it.

When I picked this novel from my tbr (to be read) list I don't know what I was expecting but for a novel set in Scotland it had all the haunting Celtic elements that I love. At first it seemed to be a psychological thriller, sort of like the first time I read Shirley Jackson's The Haunting of Hill House. I love the genre of horror but became jaded by reading so much of it from an early age. All is presented from Mike's perception and a lot of it could be his overuse of smoking weed and drinking excessively. Most could be attributed to hallucinations and a bit of paranoia. Then it threw me a few curves that had me reflecting on the movie The Sixth Sense, and I started to look for certain elements. When all was said and done I loved how the novel ended. It's difficult to write a review without giving away what happens so I leave it to you to decide. I can wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves horror!

..but overall a pretty good read. The story of two couples on a holiday to one man's family cottage in the Scottish highlands after they've graduated from university. The main character is an annoying pothead (IMO) and the story revolves around him. Elements of old Celtic folklore are components as well as an old-fashioned ghost story. In fact one character turns out to be a ghost. I was a little disappointed to find the story had the "wisecracking, sarcastic villagers vs. the naive city kids" trope but I suppose the old villager men and their teasing helped enhance feelings of paranoia in the central character. The book has plenty of horrific and supernatural imagery but I didn't think it was an overwhelming or especially gory amount, and it can be skimmed through for readers who are sensitive and still be able to follow the storyline.
